Kovai: Students guidance programme "Vazhikatti", jointly hosted by Dinamalar and SRM University got underway on March 30 at the Codissia grounds in Kovai. 

Students and parents thronged the venue even before the commencement schedule to listen to the talks provided by eminent

educationist with hopes of getting valuable information on prospective courses in establishing a bright future.

Speaking at the programme, specially  for students securing 60% to 80% marks, career counsellor, Karthikeyan told, "parents not compare their children's skills with other children. Everyone, born in this world posses some special skills. Tamil Nadu has the most number of colleges when compared to other states. However, only 10% of the students posses employable skills. Today's problem is that there is no link between job and the course studied.

It is not that only those who score high marks would achieve in life.But, statistics would tell that more students who had scored between 60% to 80% have been achievers in life. Parents, teacher and our education system are the root cause for the rising suicide rates in Tamil Nadu.

Parents need to provide more advice to their children on improving self-confidence and should stop passing negative comments. Students securing average marks posses astounding inherent skills. In our country, the biggest problem is that students don't opt jobs relevant to  their studies and skills.  Though there is phenomenal growth in the IT sector on one side, our country still lags behind in research and development.     

Before taking up up any higher education, it is good to get advice from experts and gather information about the course and college through internet. As much as possible avoid getting advice from friends and relatives. Those who work well are talented and those who extract work others are also talented.

Students taking up higher education should choose the course of their interest. Nobody would have expected such a vast and swift development in the field of technology, similarly it is difficult to predict the  changes going to happen in the future years and thereby selecting a relative course. Future life of the children will be bright, if parents understand this secret", he spoke. 

DCNS, Bombay IIT ink MoU for programs in naval defence, energy

New Delhi: Naval defence company DCNS entered into a pact with IIT Bombay for education and research programs in naval defence and energy.

According to the MoU, research and development programs will be carried out jointly by IIT Bombay and DCNS Research teams while training of DCNS personnel will be conducted by IIT Bombay through continuing education programmes.
   
The MoU will also see sponsoring of Indian student projects and fellowships at IIT Bombay, said a statement issued by DCNS.
   
The MoU was signed by executive director of DCNS Alain Bovis and Dean of Academic Programmes in IIT Bombay Shiva Prasad.
   
"This new development emphasises our investments in long term in India. It also aims to accelerate technology progress in mutually beneficial areas by tying up with one of
the top Indian research centres," Bovis said.
   
According to the statement, the research projects will be conducted in IIT Bombay with support of DCNS Research teams or in dedicated common facilities.
    
Thermo hydraulics, electrical engineering, material sciences are the promising areas of scientific interaction identified between the two organisations, the statement added.

Bonus wheat, monthly scholarship for students in Rajasthan

Jaipur: The Rajasthan government announced proposals including a bonus of Rs 100 per quintal on wheat, exemption of yarn from entry tax and a monthly scholarship of Rs 500 for economically backward students.
    
The government purchased around 13.5 lakh tonnes wheat in the present year and target for the next fiscal is around 15 lakh MT and announced a bonus of Rs 100 per quintal for wheat purchase (besides MSP), Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said in the debate on the state budget 2012-13 in the legislative assembly. The budget was presented on March 26.
    
The government will allocate Rs 150 crore for this, he added.
    
For the education sector, Gehlot proposed to upgrade 200 higher primary government schools to the level of secondary, as many secondary school to the level of senior secondary and opening of science stream in 100 senior secondary schools and commerce in as many schools.
    
He announced a scholarship scheme of 500 per month for such students, who are not availing any other scholarship scheme and with family income is up to Rs 1 lakh annually, till completion of their higher studies or for a period of maximum 5 year.
    
One lakh students who are in the merit list of 12th Rajasthan board exams will be given the scholarship, he said.
    
Gehlot also announced that all such players who are medalists in national level sports competitions will also be benefitted with two per cent reservation quota (sports) in the state services.
    
So far, medalists in only international competitions were eligible to avail this benefit, he added.
    
He made several other announcements including exemption of yarn except PV yarn from entry tax.
    
The Chief Minister also mentioned that his government recruited 67,605 so far.
    
He also proposed to release prisoners under certain categories after remitting their remaining imprisonment.
    
Prisoners suffering from Cancer, AIDS, leprosy (kushth), blind or dependent, male aged above 70 and female above 65 years who have completed 1/3 of their sentence, or those who have completed their 2/3 sentence are under the categories.
    
The Chief Minister proposed to release such prisoners only if they are not convicted under prohibited cases or sections. 

IIT Delhi secures top ranking among Indian institutes

New Delhi: IIT Delhi has emerged as the top ranking institute in the country as per a global ranking system, the government said.

The prestigious institute, a dream destination for thousands of engineering aspirants, has been placed at 218 world over by the Quacquarelli Symonds global system of ranking of higher education institutions for 2011.
   
Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha that according Quacquarelli Symonds global system of ranking, IIT-Delhi is the overall highest ranking institution in India.
   
The Minister, however, sought to clear some perceptions about the rankings done by different bodies, saying different international ranking systems use different
values, indices and parameters to rank higher education institutions.
   
"These criteria are neither universally accepted nor recognised," she said in her reply.
   
She said as per the "Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2011, IIT-Bombay is the highest ranked institution at serial 317, while the Academic Ranking of World Universities has ranked Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore at serial 321," she said.
   
On the other hand, as per the 2011 QS Engineering & Technology Rankings, IIT-Bombay is at serial 43, IIT-Delhi at 50, IIT-Kanpur at 59 and IIT-Madras at 60 in Computer Science and Information Technology.
   
In the same ranking system in Civil and Structural Engineering, IIT-Bombay is ranked at serial 30, IIT-Kanpur at serial 38 and IIT-Delhi at serial 43.
   
As per QS Global Business School Report, 2012, IIM-Ahmedabad has been ranked second in the Asia Pacific region while according to Financial Times London Global
Business School rankings, IIM-Ahmedabad is at serial 11 and Indian School of Business at serial 13. 

Engineering applications for Anna Varsity from first week of May

Chennai: Application forms for admission to Engineering courses in colleges affiliated to Anna university will be issued from first week of May, Vice- chancellor, Anna university, Mannar Jawahar told.

Towards engineering admission for the forthcoming academic year, the Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Mannar Jawahar held a high level meeting with heads of departments on March 30.

Speaking to press persons after the first coordination committee meeting for this year, he said" Exact date of issuing of application will be announced later. Initially, 2 lakh applications will be printed and if necessary 50,000 more applications will be additionally printed".

Meanwhile, Justice Balasubramanian,chairman of the fee fixation committee for professional colleges in the state, denied media reports about the education fee for private self finance colleges had gone up two fold.

He also said," So far out of the 520 engineering colleges in the state, only 164 colleges have sent proposals towards fee revision. After getting proposals from all the the engineering colleges and suggestions from parents and students a final decision on fee revision will be taken after April 15".

The vice-chancellor pointed out that there were 1.5 lakhs seats in over 520 engineering colleges in the state.

This year, the university also plans to complete the entire counseling process within 40 days, Mannar Jawahar, said.
