India announces scholarships for NRI students in Saudi

Dubai: India has announced a scholarship programme of as many as 100 grants for students of Indian origin in Saudi Arabia who are willing to pursue under graduate courses in several disciplines in their home country.
 
The Indian Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has announced the details of a scholarship scheme offering 100 scholarships to assists children of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in pursuing under graduate courses in several disciplines ranging from science, economics, law, architecture, humanities, media studies, management, hospitality, and Agriculture/ animal husbandry.
 
The scheme "Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children" (SPDC) was launched by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in 2006-07.
 
The eligibility of candidates applying for the scholarship would be judged on the basis of their performance in an qualifying examination (equivalent to plus 2 stage in India).
 
The programme is open only to PIOs /NRIs from the specified 40 countries, including Saudi Arabia, having a larger concentration of Indian Diaspora.
 
The amount of scholarship admissible would be 75 per cent of the total Institutional Economic Cost (IEC) or USD 4,000 per annum, whichever is less. IEC includes Tuition fee, Hostel fee and other institutional charges.
 
According to a Consulate statement, NRI candidates would be eligible for the grant of the scholarship only if their total family income per month does not exceed an amount equivalent to USD 2,250.
 
"Children of NRIs should have pursued at least three years of education, inclusive of 11th and 12th or equivalent (not beyond), in a foreign country during the last six years, and should have passed the qualifying examination abroad.
 
The last date for receipt of duly filled-in application forms in the prescribed format by Ed.CIL is 18th June," it said. 

Scholarships for J and K youth for higher studies outside state

New Delhi: Students clearing their Class XII or equivalent from CBSE-affiliated schools in Jammu and Kashmir will be eligible for scholarships for pursuing higher studies outside the state.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the amendments in the special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu and Kashmir by including students who pass Class XII or equivalent exam from CBSE-affiliated schools in the state.

Earlier this scheme was open to only those students who passed Class XII or the equivalent exam from the J&K Board, an official release said.

"This would increase the inclusivity of the scheme and would make many more students eligible to avail the benefit under this scheme. This revision would be effective from the academic year 2011-12," it added.

An Expert Group constituted by the Prime Minister in August 2010 to formulate jobs plan, involving the public and private sectors, had suggested offering fresh scholarships for the next five years to encourage the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to pursue higher studies outside the state.

Accordingly, a Central Sector Scheme was devised for payment of scholarship to students belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, pursuing general degree courses, engineering, medical studies and other professional courses in government colleges, institutes and other reputed institutes located outside the state. 

Arm scholarship, University of Liverpool, UK

The University of Liverpool, UK invites applications exclusively from Indian postgraduate students for theARM scholarship 2012. Students who have been offered a place on one of the University's Masters degree programmes in microelectronic systems or microelectronic systems and telecommunications could be eligible for the ARM scholarship, which includes a four-month paid internship at a world-leading technology company in Cambridge. The scholarship is an award of £6,200 and the successful candidate will be chosen from interviews in India in May this year. 

Requirements: 

Candidates should have a first class BE, ME, BTech or MTech degree in a subject related to electronic engineering or a computer science/engineering degree where hardware electives have been taken. Students are also required to have relevant work experience in embedded systems, systems on chip, or IC design. The students will begin their studies at the University in September and complete their Masters project as paid interns in the research and development group at ARM Ltd in Cambridge over the summer period of 2013.

Over 17,000 students secure middle school scholarship in Maharashtra

PUNE: A total of 17,552 students have secured the middle school scholarship in the state, exam for which was held by the Maharashtra State Council of Examinations on March 18.

A statement issued by the council here on Wednesday said the result of the middle school scholarship for std IV was announced online on May 1.

The scholarship examinations for middle and high schools in the state went hi-tech from this year, with the introduction of Optical Mark Readable (OMR) answer sheets for objective type papers, as is done in common entrance tests for engineering and medical courses. The compilation of results was done by way of a computerised data entry process. The OMR sheets, which can be read by a computer, ensured an even faster processing of the results, the statement said.

About 7.43 lakh students had registered for the exam of which 6.99 lakh appeared. About 3.62 lakh students cleared the examination and 17,552 students were selected for an award of scholarship. The statement said that each district has been awarded 10 scholarships on line of national general scholarships besides the quota for rural and urban students, those from the scheduled caste, children of landless farm labourers, rural tribal students and those from the Vidarbha region.

The merit list for rural areas containing 116 names and merit list for urban areas containing 106 names, plus a merit list of 50 students from CBSE/ICSE boards have been put up on the exam council website www. mscepune.in

University of Glasgow: College internship scholarships

The Graduate School of the College of Arts, University of Glasgow, announces up to nine new College Internship Scholarships for PhD students registering in 2012/13, providing a fee waiver at Home/EU rate and a £6000 internship stipend per annum. 

Eligibility: The College Internship Scholarships are for Home/EU/international students commencing PhD study in the College of Arts in 2012/13. International applicants should note that the fee waiver is for the Home/EU rate (£3828 per annum in 2012/13). The international fee for PhD study is £12,250 per annum. 

In order to be considered for a College Internship Scholarship, you must have been offered a place on a PhD programme within the College of Arts, and must be commencing study in 2012/13. Students commencing other programmes of research (eg MRes, MLitt, MPhil) are not eligible. 

You must not be holding another full scholarship for the 2012/13 academic session, but those in receipt of partial scholarships may apply.

Applications are ranked by school committees and then considered by the College Scholarships Committee. The scholarship covers the payment of annual fees directly to the university, at the Home/EU rate, up to three years' full-time, pro rata (5 years) part-time. The scholarship provides an internship bursary of £6,000 per annum, up to three years full-time, pro rata (5 years) part-time. 

Deadline: Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 30. Only applications which have been fully processed and students offered admission to PhD study on a conditional or unconditional basis will be considered for a scholarship. Applicants should expect to hear about the outcome of the competition by early June. Internship Opportunities: The College of Arts operates three doctoral internship scholarship schemes - College Teaching Internship Scholarship, College Research Internship Scholarship and College Administration Internship Scholarship. Students awarded an Internship Scholarship are expected to undertake an average of three hours' work experience per week. GICTS College to give 1. 25cr scholarships

Ibsen Scholarships, 2012

The Ibsen Scholarships award innovative projects in the field of drama and performing arts and projects that act as incentives for critical discourse with regards to existential and society-related subject matter concerning Henrik Ibsen and his plays.

“The Ibsen Scholarships were initiated  by the Norwegian government in 2008. This is the fifth year for the scholarships. Till now, 15 scholarships across 11 countries have been handed out. From India, only one project was awarded in 2008 and we are hoping to receive exciting project applications from India this year,” said Hilde Guri Bohlin, head of Ibsen Awards, Norway.

No particular country or continent has dominated the awards so far. In 2011 however, three projects, one each in Sudan, South Africa and one in Lebanon, were awarded in Africa, informed Bohlin.

The Ibsen Scholarships are awarded annually and project submissions are subject to scrutiny by a jury. The total fund of the scholarship is approximately 1,000,000 NOK (approximately euro 1,30,000/US$ 1,70,000) for projects worldwide, to individuals, organisations or institutions within the artistic and cultural community.

The winners of The Ibsen Scholarships 2012 will be presented the awards at the International Ibsen Conference from September 10 - 11 at Skien, Norway, the home town of  Henrik Ibsen.

Bonus wheat, monthly scholarship for students in Rajasthan

Jaipur: The Rajasthan government announced proposals including a bonus of Rs 100 per quintal on wheat, exemption of yarn from entry tax and a monthly scholarship of Rs 500 for economically backward students.
    
The government purchased around 13.5 lakh tonnes wheat in the present year and target for the next fiscal is around 15 lakh MT and announced a bonus of Rs 100 per quintal for wheat purchase (besides MSP), Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said in the debate on the state budget 2012-13 in the legislative assembly. The budget was presented on March 26.
    
The government will allocate Rs 150 crore for this, he added.
    
For the education sector, Gehlot proposed to upgrade 200 higher primary government schools to the level of secondary, as many secondary school to the level of senior secondary and opening of science stream in 100 senior secondary schools and commerce in as many schools.
    
He announced a scholarship scheme of 500 per month for such students, who are not availing any other scholarship scheme and with family income is up to Rs 1 lakh annually, till completion of their higher studies or for a period of maximum 5 year.
    
One lakh students who are in the merit list of 12th Rajasthan board exams will be given the scholarship, he said.
    
Gehlot also announced that all such players who are medalists in national level sports competitions will also be benefitted with two per cent reservation quota (sports) in the state services.
    
So far, medalists in only international competitions were eligible to avail this benefit, he added.
    
He made several other announcements including exemption of yarn except PV yarn from entry tax.
    
The Chief Minister also mentioned that his government recruited 67,605 so far.
    
He also proposed to release prisoners under certain categories after remitting their remaining imprisonment.
    
Prisoners suffering from Cancer, AIDS, leprosy (kushth), blind or dependent, male aged above 70 and female above 65 years who have completed 1/3 of their sentence, or those who have completed their 2/3 sentence are under the categories.
    
The Chief Minister proposed to release such prisoners only if they are not convicted under prohibited cases or sections. 

Commonwealth Scholarships

University Of Southampton’s Centre for Research on Ageing, UK, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, is offering ten scholarships for students to study on the MSc Gerontology (distance learning) programme for the year 2012-13. The programme aims to train students in ageing over the course of life through the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The scholarships cover the cost of tuition fees (£6,500 per year) for the programme, teaching and learning materials, and travel to the accommodation, and subsistence for the week-long MSc Gerontology (distance learning) residential course at the university in spring 2013. The course will allow students to acquire specialist knowledge in Gerontology and key research skills.

The eligibility criteria is a high second-class (2:1) Bachelor's honours or equivalent degree in the social sciences or in a field relevant to gerontology and ageing. The application has to be submitted online.

Chennai students win TOEFL scholarship 2011

Chennai: Two students from Chennai were beyond ecstasy when they won the esteemed TOEFL Scholarship 2011.

Sruthi Chandrasekaran, an IITian and Gaayathry Ravikumar, a Chemical Engineer from NIT, Trichy were the two who won the prestigious scholarship of $ 10,000 each for the year 2011.

Sruthi Chandrasekaran, a resident of Chennai completed her undergraduation from IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras, is currently pursuing MSc in Comparative Social Policy at the oldest University in the English-speaking world, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

Gaayathry Ravikumar, also a resident of Chennai, completed her chemical engineering from National Institute of Technology, Trichy and is presently pursuing her Masters in Product Development at University of California, Berkeley. 

Britain announces 60 new scholarships for Indians

Mumbai. British Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday announced 60 new "Jubilee Scholarships" to be awarded in India for one-year masters course in Britain, a statement said.

Funded by the British Council and the British government, the scholarships have been launched as part of the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The aim is to enable exceptional talent from across India to come and study masters courses in business, administration, manufacturing, science or technology.

"We're delighted that we're able to offer this opportunity for sixty Indian scholars to study in the UK. A scholarship is a fitting way to mark the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee, as it is the creation of new opportunity - not just for the student, but for the host institution to benefit from Indian perspectives and ideas, for new friendships to be made and new links to be created and fostered between our two countries," said Rob Lynes, the British Council's director in India.

The awards will be open to applicants from all over India, and the scheme aims to include students from every Indian state among the awardees. Each award will cover university tuition fee, living expenses for the duration of the scholarship (maximum 12 months), a month-long internship in the Britain, return airfare and a British visa.

Assam to give scholarship to young litterateurs

Guwahati: The Assam government announced a scholarship scheme for promising litterateurs with a view to promote research and writing on indigenous issues.

Under the scheme, young litterateurs would be eligible for scholarship of up to Rs 1 lakh for undertaking basic research and the state government would also help them to get their works published.

“For youngsters it is very difficult to undertake research and writing. With an intention to help them, we are launching a scholarship scheme and 100 youngsters would be selected every year for this scheme,” Assam Education Minister and government spokesperson Himanta Biwsa Sarma told reporters here.

He said that the litterateurs would also receive 40 per cent royalty in case they decide to have their completed works published by the state-run Prakashan Parishad.

Sarma also said that government will also start a special healthcare scheme for writers and litterateurs to help them in time of physical ailment. “A fund pool would be created for this purpose by our government,” he said.

UK announces scholarship grants for master courses

Sixty new scholarships for Master's programmes in the UK for Indian students have been announced. 
David Cameron, prime minister of UK, recently announced 60 new 'Jubilee Scholarships' for Indian students who will receive full funding for a one-year Master's course in the UK, starting September. 

The awards, funded by the British Council, will be open to applicants from across India, and aims to include students from every Indian state among its awardees. 

A part of 'The GREAT' campaign, the scholarships will be offered only in the areas of business administration, manufacturing , and science and technology, which have been identified as popular subjects that Indian students opt for in the UK. 

Indian nationals with a valid Indian passport can apply for the scholarships. The eligibility criteria require aspirants to have a graduate degree with an excellent academic track record; s/he should have applied for admission to a Master's course (12 months' duration) at a UK institution with the course of study in any of the subject areas mentioned above. An ideal candidate must be ambitious, entrepreneurial and have leadership skills. Also, s/he must demonstrate a commitment to return to India and contribute to the development of the country. 

The scholarships will cover the university's tuition fee, living expenses for the duration of the scholarship (for a maximum of 12 months) and a one month internship programme in the UK (approximately GBP 900-1000 per month) along with return airfare and a UK visa. 

The last date for submission of application forms for the scholarship is April 30.  

Online registration of complaints over scholarships in AP

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Government introduced online registration of complaints over payment of  scholarships by Government for students and colleges.

“Only complaints registered online will be attended to on priority. Students and colleges can now visit the ePass website at http://epass.cgg.gov.in and register their complaints,” an official release said here.

“Colleges and students are requested to keep a copy of the complaint number. They can check the status of their complaint by entering the number. All complaints registered will be automatically routed to the officials concerned,” it said.

All District Welfare Officers and Welfare Departments should encourage colleges and students to file their complaint online henceforth. The officers should login to the website each day and check the number of grievances registered and disposed them off on a daily basis, the release added.

InvEnt Scholarship 2012

The Avery Dennison Foundation InvEnt (Invention + Entrepreneurship) scholarship programme aims to reward invention, innovation and excellence in high-achieving students studying in the fields of engineering and technology at selected higher education institutions in India and China. These scholarship awards are part of a programme offered by the Avery Dennison Foundation to inspire the spirit of invention among students. The InvEnt Programme also includes a series of engaging on-campus Discover Innovation Workshops for awardees and other interested members of the academic community at participating colleges.

The participating colleges are M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore;  Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani; Anna University, Chennai and  Pune Vidhyarthi Griha's College of Engineering and Technology, Pune.

Selected students will receive US$ 1,200 scholarship to be used in their second year of study.

Eligibility criteria

All Indian nationals, who are currently enrolled in the first year of studies at a participating college are eligible to apply. The candidate should be interested in invention and innovation in science and technology and should be studying any one of the following academic fields: chemical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, textile engineering or print engineering.

USIEF Fellowship for school teachers: International leaders in education programme

United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has announced the 2012 International Leaders in Education Programme (ILEP) for secondary-level (classes IX to XII) school teachers, teaching English, social studies, mathematics and science at schools in the states of Bihar, NCT of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and all Union Territories in the Northern India. This US government sponsored programme provides international teachers with opportunities to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills and increase their knowledge about the United States. ILEP consists of a semester-long non-degree , non-credit academic programme at a US University including seminars on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson planning and teaching strategies.
