Anna University runs out of forms

Nearly 40,000 sets of application forms, coding sheets, information booklets and brochures are being printed to meet the demand. The deadline for submission extended to June 6. The university has also suspended the sale of forms for three days – Monday to Wednesday.

The race for engineering seats has become more intense this year, so much so that Anna University has run out of application forms just ten days after the sale of applications began. The university has already sold the two lakh engineering forms it had printed this year, and is in the process of printing more

It has also suspended the sale of forms for three days – Monday to Wednesday. Sales will resume on May 24 and will go on till May 31. The last date for submission of forms has been extended to June 6.

Nearly 40,000 sets of application forms, coding sheets, information booklets and brochures are being printed to meet the demand. “The forms will take two days to reach 59 centres, including the newly instituted one in Tiruppur,” said V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA).

Class XII students who are awaiting their results, scheduled to be announced on May 22, are now immensely relieved. Earlier this week, the School Education Department had announced that mark sheets would be handed over to students only on May 30, which left them with just a day to submit the forms. D. Sabitha, Secretary, School Education Department, said the department had written to Anna University to extend the last date for submission of forms.

P. Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor, Anna University, told The Hindu that the extension would help students, especially candidates from out of town, whose forms might not have otherwise reached on time.

In Chennai, the forms are being sold at Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, Government Polytechnic College, Pursaiwakkam and Bharathi Government Women's College, Broadway.

Students can submit forms online, but only after the announcement of results. “The candidate has to send photocopies of the documents, including mark sheets, photograph, transfer certificate and other required certificates,” said Mr. Uthariaraj. Most students prefer buying forms to filling them online, as they can get the information booklets from the centres instead of having to get a print out. Many students and their parents who have come to Chennai to buy the forms were dismayed by the development and were concerned about having to spend three days in the city. P. Dhanush Kumar, who had come all the way from Dharmapuri, said: “I came here because the officials at the government arts college there said the forms were over. But it's the same here.” He plans to stay here till Wednesday in a lodge and go back with the forms. N. Velmurugun, a parent from Erode, however, decided to head back home with his daughter. “We will come back on March 30.”

The increase in the number of applicants is attributed to many reasons. “Biology students have also bought engineering forms as the number of seats in medical colleges has not increased. Aspirants for seats in medicine also feel that the cut-offs will be lower this time, and last year's toppers have a better chance,” said Mr. Uthariaraj. Also in 2011, Anna University began application sales a couple of days after the results and only those eligible for admission bought the forms. 

General counselling for engineering from July 9

 General counselling for admission to engineering colleges in the State through the single window system will begin on July 9.

Nearly 86,000 applications were sold on day one of the sale of forms for admissions to 1.6 lakh seats in about 525 colleges in the State, revealing the continuing popularity of engineering education.

Giving away applications to students on Friday, Anna University Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said that the general counselling for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2012) would begin on July 9 and last till August 12. Random numbers would be assigned on June 20 and rank list published on June 24.

Admissions under the sports quota would be on July 1. Phase1 of vocational counselling would be between July 3 and 7. For the differently abled, the counselling would be on July 8.

As many as 85,986 students bought the applications on day one, said Prof. Rhymend Uthariaraj, Secretary, TNEA 2012. Nearly 20,000 applications, including 16,300 at Anna University, were sold in the city.

The counselling is for admission to Anna university departments, university colleges, government and aided engineering colleges and for government quota seats in self-financing engineering colleges under the unified single window system of admission.

“Many colleges have applied for new courses and more seats in the existing courses. Their applications are with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Besides, several trusts have applied to AICTE for approval to start new colleges,” Mr. Jawahar said expecting more seats to be added this year.

Last year, over 45,000 seats fell vacant in engineering colleges. 

Anna varsity final-year UG results before June 30

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government said the results of examinations to be written by final-year UG students of Anna University from Monday onwards would be released before June 30.
  
"The exams would be conducted from Monday onwards. In order to facilitate the final-year students of Anna University to join their placements or to apply for higher studies, the results would be announced before June 30," P Palaniappan, Higher Education Minister told the Assembly.
  
The issue was raised by Congress MLA Vijayadharani.   

"The government would think about conducting the exams before April from next year," the Minister said.

Fewer takers for engineering applications in Anna University on Day 1

CHENNAI: The forecast is dim for engineering admissions this year. On Friday, the first day of the sale of applications, Anna University sold 85,986 forms at various centres across the state - nearly 2,800 lesser than the 88,770 applications sold on the first day in 2011. 

"This is an indication that more engineering seats are likely to go vacant this year than in 2011," said educational consultant P Moorthy Selvakumaran. 

Last year, Anna University began issuing applications a couple of days after the results were announced, meaning only those eligible for admission could have bought the forms. This year, the Class 12 board exam results are expected only on May 22 and more forms were expected to be sold. Still, the first-day number is low, clearly indicating a trend, said educational consultants. 

Anna University vice-chancellor P Mannar Jawahar had earlier said that more than 2 lakh forms had been printed and that every engineering aspirant could be assured of a seat. 

Despite 42,000 government quota seats going vacant last year, about 28,000 seats are to be added to the matrix in 2012. The All India Council for Technical Education has approved more than 100 new engineering colleges and many existing ones have sought approval for additional seats and new courses. 

Academics said more students were likely to go to arts and science colleges as IT companies had indicated, during the last placement season, that they preferred science graduates to engineers for jobs like software testing, as they could be hired at lower salaries.

Anna varsity releases revised semester exam schedule

Chennai: Over the last few days, engineering students across the state of Tamil Nadu have been looming over the schedule of semester exams to be conducted in May.

After lot of mix-up, finally Anna University has come up with a revised schedule, which is available on its official website.

Numerous problems have emerged, after the amalgamation of five Anna University of Technology, which were functioning independently at Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Kovai with Anna University, Chennai.

At a time when these universities were implementing their own syllabus, the merger under one university has brought out several administrative problems, revealed department sources. 

Due to the merger, Anna University has been pressed to take the responsibility of conducting semester exams for all the Engineering colleges in the state. It is told that without the accessibility of student details and syllabus structure it has become very difficult on part of Anna University to conduct the semester exams as per original schedule.

After prolonged deliberation, Anna University has come out with a new revised schedule for the semester exams that is available on its official website.

Engineering applications for Anna Varsity from first week of May

Chennai: Application forms for admission to Engineering courses in colleges affiliated to Anna university will be issued from first week of May, Vice- chancellor, Anna university, Mannar Jawahar told.

Towards engineering admission for the forthcoming academic year, the Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Mannar Jawahar held a high level meeting with heads of departments on March 30.

Speaking to press persons after the first coordination committee meeting for this year, he said" Exact date of issuing of application will be announced later. Initially, 2 lakh applications will be printed and if necessary 50,000 more applications will be additionally printed".

Meanwhile, Justice Balasubramanian,chairman of the fee fixation committee for professional colleges in the state, denied media reports about the education fee for private self finance colleges had gone up two fold.

He also said," So far out of the 520 engineering colleges in the state, only 164 colleges have sent proposals towards fee revision. After getting proposals from all the the engineering colleges and suggestions from parents and students a final decision on fee revision will be taken after April 15".

The vice-chancellor pointed out that there were 1.5 lakhs seats in over 520 engineering colleges in the state.

This year, the university also plans to complete the entire counseling process within 40 days, Mannar Jawahar, said.
