NIT- Rourkela bags 5th rank among best universities of India

Rourkela: National Inistiture of Technology (NIT), Rourkela has bagged the fifth rank among the best universities in India and 1067th rank in the world, according to a new survey conducted by a global research group.

The NIT occupied the position in webmetrics ranking of world univeristies by Cybermetrics lab, a Spain based international research group.

The webmetric ranking of world universities is an initiative of the cybermetric lab, a research group belonging to the Consijo Superior de investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, NIT sources said.

The cybermetric lab, part of CSIC is devoted to the qualitative analysis of the internet and web content specialy those related to this process of generation and scholarly communication of scientific konwladge. This is a new discipline called Cybermetric.

NIT-Rourkela Director Sunil Kumar Sarangi said the ranking of NIT was a matter of great pride and profound honour for the entire NIT family, faculty, staff, students and to all others "who helped us in our efforts to achieve this prestigious position". 

BARC to set up centre at NIT Silchar

Karimganj: Bhaba Atomic Research Centre would set up a centre at the NIT, Silchar campus to promote research and work among students and scholars.

"BARC will set up its unit here in order to enable scholars, teachers and students to undertake more and better research and exploratory works in the field of science and technology," NIT Silchar Director N V Deshpande has said.

He said senior nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar would be the chief guest at NIT Silchar's convocation on June 17.

Kakodkar is a former director of BARC and ex-chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

NIT Silchar, located in Cachar district, is one of the premier institutes of higher education in lower Assam's Barak Valley.

Srinagar NITs intake capacity increased to 632 seats: JK Govt

Jammu: The intake capacity of National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Srinagar has been increased to 632 seats, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Abdul Gani Malik said.
    
"The erstwhile Regional Engineering College, Srinagar has been upgraded to the level of NIT and its intake capacity has been increased from 330 to 632 seats," Malik told the Legislative Council here.
 
He said admission to NIT, Srinagar is made on the basis of AIEEE merit list.
    
Malik said 50 per cent of the seats are reserved for students of the state and rest for students on all-India merit basis.

BrahMos to tie-up with NIT-Tiruchirappalli

Tiruchirappalli (TN): BrahMos Aerospace plans to take up collaborative research work with educational institutions, including the National Institute of Technology here, for development of hypersonic version of Brahmos missiles.

BrahMos was roping in various academic and industrial institutions across the country for research on suitable robotics, sensitive materials and others required for the hypersonic missiles, its CEO and MD Dr Sivathanu Pillai said.

BrahMos Aerospace is an Indo-Russian joint venture producing Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles.
    
After the development of land, sea and air versions of supersonic missiles, BrahMos was in the process of venturing into development, design and production of hypersonic missiles, which can travel at seven to eight times the speed of sound (7-8 Mach), he said.
   
It was on the look out for new materials that could withstand high speed and heavy vibration in the development of hypersonic missiles.
  
NIT-T, which has courses in disciplines like robotics, material management, metallurgy, was among the institutions being roped in for the collaboration, Pillai, who made a presentation at Pragyan, the annual Techno-Management festival of the institute, told.
  
Institute Director Dr.Srinivasan Sundararajan said discussions with BrahMos had already been initiated and very shortly a collaborative pact would be finalised.
