Odisha to convert local employment exchanges to career centres

Bhubaneswar: To meet the target of training one million youths in various employable skills during the 12th five year plan, Odisha government has decided to convert the district employment exchanges as career guidance centers.
     
"All the district level employment exchanges will be converted as the offices of the employment mission and will operate as career guidance centres for unemployed youths," said Chief Secreatry B K Patnaik after attending a conference on Skill Odisha Summit.
     
On the basis of screening and assessments done at these centers, eligible youths would be given skill training in different sectors, the chief secretary said adding that the state government targets at least one million persons to be given skill training as against the union governments target of 2.78 million.
    
The potential sectors on which the state government has identified for imparting training are construction, apparel, driving, manufacturing, hospitality and the service industry. 
    
According to the strategy paper 'Market Linked Skilled Development Training Programme for Unemployed Youth' released the state government has set tentative targets to train ten lakh youths in different sectors.
    
While construction and textile sectors target to train 2 lakh each youths, 1.5 lakh of unemployed persons would be trained in driving and manufacturing sectors. 
    
Similarly, the projected figure for manufacturing, health, security guards, hospitality, IT/ITes (Information technology/IT enabled services) and retail is fifty thousand each.
    
For telecom, banking and other miscellaneous sectors about 50,000 youths would be trained in the 12th five-year plan, the paper said.
    
Dillip Chenoy of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) said over the next 15 years, the total work force demand for skilled jobs in Odisha was expected to grow from 76 lakhs in 2011 to 135 lakhs in 2026. 

Centre to support to J and K efforts for youth employment: PM's Advisor

Srinagar: Prime Ministers Advisor for National Skill Development Council S Ramadorai said the Centre will lend full support to Jammu and Kashmir government in its endeavour make the youth of the state employable.
     
Chairing a meeting on ‘Skill Development here, he said the focus of efforts to tackle unemployment should be on creating a platform where employability of youth forms a central concern.
     
"Government institutions, academicians and corporate houses have a responsibility in this regard to work together and sort out issues and address the mismatch between supply and demand," Ramadorai said.
 
State Chief Secretary Madhav Lal, Joint Secretary, in Ministry of Home Affairs K Skandan, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister B B Vyas and administrative secretaries of different departments participated in the meeting.
 
While briefing Ramadorai on the initiatives taken by the state government, the Chief Secretary said the state government is following a policy of identifying sectors with large employment potential and imparting skills that will lead to higher growth and employability.
     
"Our plan is to increase by two times our existing institutional capacities and execute partnerships between the government and the industry and also to tie-up with markets outside the state and even globally to achieve our targets of employability," Lal said.
 
Skill development strategies and sectoral initiatives by various departments were presented and deliberated upon during the meeting, an official spokesman said. 
 
Progress and impact of skill development initiatives and empowerment schemes including ‘Udaan and ‘Himayat were also reviewed, he said. 

Employment increases by 2.26 lakh

New Delhi: Continuing its upward trend, employment in the country during the October-December quarter last year increased by 2.26 lakh, the government said.

During this quarter, the increase was visible across all the sectors except leather and automobile.

The results were based on the thirteenth quarterly survey report carried out by the Labour Bureau of the Labour and Employment Ministry to assess the effect of economic slowdown on employment in India'.

The survey was first carried out in 2008 following the slowdown in global economy, and since then the survey said overall estimated employment in all selected sectors has experienced a net addition of 25.84 till the latest survey.

The sectors taken to conduct the survey were textiles, leather, metals, automobiles, gems and jewellery, transport, IT/BPO and handloom/powerloom.

Referring to the October-December quarterly survey, the report said at the sectoral level, the maximum increase of 1.09 lakh in employment was witnessed in IT/BPO sector during this period as compared to the same period a year before.

This was followed by increase of 0.78 lakh in textiles including apparels, 0.34 lakh in transport, 0.13 lakh in handloom/powerloom and 0.10 lakh in gems and jewellery.

The report further said the maximum increase in overall employment by 1.94 lakh was seen in the direct category of workers as compared to 0.32 lakh in the contract category of workers.

In the export-oriented units, the employment at the overall level increased by 2.67 lakh while in the non-exporting units, it decreased by 0.41 lakh.
