Ayurveda college students urge govt to provide infrastructure

Nagercoil: Students of the Government Ayurveda College here urged the Tamil Nadu government to take all steps, including providing proper infrastructure and getting due central government recognition.
  
Officials quoting students speaking to reporters said the Centre had 'suddenly' cancelled recognition/permission to the college, shocking first and second year students and also 48 others who had submitted their certificates and were awaiting formal admission.
   
Union minister for state for Health Sujib Bandopadhyaya had told reporters here recently that college had not been given recognition as it did not have infrastructure.
  
Officials said 48 students selected in October 2011 had been given certificates. The Centre had denied permission even as their admission was to be formalised, they said.

IIM-Rohtak to organise marathon on sensitising gender disparity

Rohtak: In its effort to highlight the issue of gender disparity in Haryana, infamous for its skewed sex ratio, the Indian Institute of Management Rohtak will be organising a marathon on February 19.
   
The Rohtak marathon is a part of a series of initiatives taken by the IIM to tackle social issues, an official of the institute said, adding that it is a part of the ongoing campaign- India for girl child.
    
According to a recent data, released United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs ( UN-DESA) for 150 countries over 40 years shows that Indian girl child aged 1-5 years is 75 per cent more likely to die than an Indian boy.
   
The two-year-old institute has been involved extensively in various social welfare initiatives in association with NGOs such as Etasha Society, iCare, India Earth NGO, Srishti Gyaan Kendra, Ch Lakhi Ram Anaathalaya and Jan Seva Sansthaan.
   
"The city marathon will be a mainstream sports event. We are planning to organise a marathon every year and are expecting participation from people of Haryana and Delhi-NCR region.
    
"Rohtak has an enduring sporting culture that can be leveraged to connect people, raise awareness about social issues, and find sustainable solutions through collaborations," said Pritam Agarwal, member of PR cell of the IIM.
    
He said that this year Apollo Tyres and Biowell Natural Health have signed up as the official running and health partner respectively for the two races (5 km and 10 km).
    
"During the event, IIM Rohtak, in partnership with the Sun foundation, will be announcing need based scholarships for 100 girls to cover their educational expenses incurred over twelve years from Class I to Class XII.
    
"This announcement will take the 'India for girl child' campaign one step further and will open up new possibilities," said Pritam.
    
"The marathon will be a defining moment in Haryana's history, as IIM Rohtak attempts to create awareness about a burning issue.
    
"Haryana has a skewed sex ratio of 826:1000," said Priyadarshee, a student of the IIM, adding that the marathon would serve as a platform where all these objectives can be achieved. 

ICECD to take entrepreneurship to Namibia

Ahmedabad: City-based International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (ICECD) said it has tied up with the Namibian Government to start a business training programme for the youth in the south African country.

"We have tied up with the Namibian Youth Ministry to start up an entrepreneurship programme for the youth there. The project is going to start very soon," ICECD Director Hina Shah said.

The project is slated to start in next two months.

"Our target is to impart training to around 8,000 youth in Namibia over a period of three years," ICECD Senior Executive Chandramauli Pathak said.

"We have a micro-credit programme running in India, which helps youth and urban poor to become entrepreneurs. It is supported by the Commonwealth Youth initiative, which is part of the UK-based Commonwealth Secretariat," he said.

Under this programme ICECD provides training to youth, offers doorstep credit, collection and delivery, based on their entrepreneurial behaviour.  

"The same micro-credit model shall be replicated in Namibia too," Pathak said.

"The Ministry of Youth in Namibia and Commonwealth Youth Programme have set up a fund for this programme. We shall provide training to the youths and shall be engaged in micro-credit management for it," the senior executive said.

"Under the programme, youth shall be trained, given micro-credit assistance between USD 150-250 and in certain special cases up to USD 500," Pathak said.

The Commonwealth Youth Programme was established by the Commonwealth heads in 1973.

ICEDC, which completed 25 years of its foundation, organised a walkathon event titled 'A Walk to Self-reliance'.

Dept of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras to host one day seminar

Chennai: Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras is organizing a one-day workshop titled “Onshore Petroleum Spills Case studies in India and the Way Forward” on the 7th of Feb, 2012.

Conducted as a part of the collaborative research project on Fate of petroleum hydrocarbons along with Land and Water Group of CSIRO Australia, experts, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders from petroleum industry will deliberate on the various issues pertaining to the environmental issues associated with petroleum product spills in refineries, drilling sites, storage sites and retail outlets.

Apart from that, experts from CSIRO Australia and Auburn University U.S.A will also share their experiences in their respective countries.

Minister of Environment, B.V Ramana will inaugurate the one-day workshop. Other dignitaries to be present at the workshop are C.V.Shankar, Principal secretary Environment, Govt of Tamil Nadu and T. Srinavasamurthy, Director of Environment, Govt of Tamil Nadu, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.     

Govt School tops state level football league

Chennai: Disha Sports Academy in association with Chennai Football Association (CFA), conducted Disha  Champions League Football - 2012, an annual state level football championship for the fourth consecutive year.

This tournament for children of U 13 & U 17 category, aims to identify upcoming and promising talent in football among the children from lower economic strata.

In the U-13 category for schools, Govt Hr Sec School, Ayanambakkam beat SBOA (Matric) to take the cup. Disha sports Academy outplayed St Patrick's academy in the same category for academies.  

In the U-17 category for academies, the finals were played between the Tiger Garden and Shaolin Soccer teams at Nehru Stadium in which Shaolin soccer team emerged as winners. In the same category for schools, St Patrick's beat Cresent.

 

Other special awards presented to the players were for highest goal scorer and promising player.  

Successfully organised for the fourth consecutive year saw 78 teams participating in this year's tournament.
