Stating that there has been significant progress in all directions over the past 65 years since the country attained freedom, the former president said that much  more was needed to be done to realise the vision of a developed India to ensure inclusive growth and integrated development.

"The youths must become 'enablers' to bring inclusive growth and integrated development for welfare of people," Kalam said in a motivational speech.

Identifying the Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) as the mission to put in place a sustainable development system, he said that the development in villages and empowerment of the people at the grassroot level were key to sustainable development of the country.

The villages must have good infrastructure for connectivity, education, knowledge and amenities like drinking water and health care and the PURA has potential to uplift the rural areas by increasing earning capacity and prosperity of the villages, Kalam said.

He asked the NIT students to initiate PURA model in Amhara village in partnership with the people, private sector and institutions and said that this model of  development of rural areas should be adopted throughout the state.
Kalam also stressed on convergence of technologies and the need to use nano technology like bio-informatics, photonics, micro-electronics, etc for its application in areas of medicine, electronics and material science.

"I am sure about the convergence of bio-nano-info technologies can lead to the development of nano-robot that can be used for drug delivery," he said.

The former president also explained to the students about the convergence of science and said that during the 21st century science, technology and environment will have to work together to sustain the future of the mankind.

The former president, who has launched an-anti corruption crusade with a theme 'What Can I Give', administered oath to the students for integrity in personal life, social service and patriotism.

Integrating with another group of students at the S.K. Memorial Hall, he narrowed the ambit of his oath to the students and asked them to take pledge to keep their mother happy for happiness of their families, society, state and country in that order.

Kalam, who has been projected by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the presidential candidate of her party and the SP, asked the gathering comprising mostly students as to how many of them would like to become politicians and upon seeing many raised hands, he said that it beckoned well for Indian democracy and politics.
