Patna: Justice Altamas Kabir of the Supreme Court stressed the need for making legal awareness part of society and education to be introduced as part of Curriculum of Universities across the country.
Speaking at the 10th All India meet of the Legal Services Authorities of states here, justice Kabir said that section four of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Act mandated that legal awareness be made part of the society and education in the universities of the country.
"In India, people are keen to know about their legal rights and access to justice", he said, adding the legal awareness would come in handy in tacking the problems facing the people in India.
Justice Kabir said the objective of NALSA is to sensitise people about their legal rights and the works of NALSA through legal aid, camps, clinics and centres have to take it to the grassroot level.
The NALSA should not not be a "Court centric" centre and rather it should be made "socio-cultural centric", Kabir, who is also executive chairman of NALSA emphasised.
Justice Kabir further said that NALSA had been successful in drawing people's attention and has caught people's imagination.
"The Para-legal volunteers under NALSA involved in creating awareness be given infrastructural support by the governments", he said.
Chief Justice of Patna High Court R M Doshit and State Law Minister Narendra Narayan Yadav also sopke on the occasion.
