School teacher arrested on sexual harassment charge


Udhagamandalam: A 50-year old teacher of a government school near here was today arrested on the charge of 'sexually harassing' some girl students, police said.

 High drama preceded the arrest as around 200 residents of Keelkothagiri village, about 30 km from here, held a day-long picketing in front of the higher secondary school demanding immediate action against commerce teacher Balraj.

The villagers, including parents of the students, resorted to the protest against the teacher after one of the girls complained that he was harassing them after school hours for the past five months. Some of the villagers allegedly manhandled the teacher and demanded that the District Chief Education Officer visit the school and order his dismissal from service, police said.

Coonoor RDO Gandhimathi rushed to the school and conducted an inquiry during which five girl students deposed before her. She also griled the teacher and submitted a report to the education authorities.

Based on the report, Balraj was arrested and produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody, police said.
